Academic Life Coaching

Where academics meet self-discovery.

Most school programs are built to move students forward. Very few are built to help them understand themselves. Academic Life Coaching is built for that.

Coaching Creates Space to Explore the Why

There is a version of every student that is more focused, more self-aware, more deliberate about the choices they make — and more confident in the direction they're heading. Most students never get structured support in developing that version. School moves fast, and the inner work rarely makes it onto the syllabus.

Academic Life Coaching creates that space.

I work with high school students through early-career adults on the things that actually drive academic and personal performance: motivation, self-awareness, decision-making, values, limiting beliefs, and how to build systems that hold.

About the Academic Life Coaching Program

Ten sessions move through four interconnected areas. The structure is consistent and what happens inside it belongs entirely to the student. Each session is shaped by their questions, their goals, and whatever is most present for them.

Academic Systems

How do I succeed?

Most students never have the space to explore how they actually learn best. School moves fast, and the focus is almost always on what to learn — rarely on how. This cornerstone slows that down. We look at how the student is wired, what drives them, and how to build study systems that work with their natural rhythms rather than against them. When the right systems are in place, everything else has room to grow.

In sessions 1-3, we explore:

  • Learning and motivation styles

  • Study systems

  • Stress reduction

  • Well-designed actions

Personal Fluency

Who am I and what are my strengths?

Every student carries an internal dialogue — beliefs, assumptions, and perspectives that shape how they see themselves and what they think is possible. Most of the time that dialogue runs quietly in the background, unexamined. This cornerstone brings it forward. Students learn to recognize the patterns that have been driving their decisions, challenge the ones that no longer serve them, and build a clearer, more honest picture of who they are. This is often where the biggest shifts happen.

In sessions 4-6, we explore:

  • Limiting beliefs

  • The inner critic

  • Assumptions and perspectives

  • Values and decision-making

Leadership

How can I build a community?

Leadership in this program has nothing to do with titles or positions. It's about understanding how students show up for others — in a classroom, in a friendship, in a family, in a life. This cornerstone asks students to look outward: at the relationships they're building, the impact they want to have, and the kind of person they are becoming in community with others. Students clarify their passions, define their mission, and begin to lead from a place that is authentically their own.

In sessions 7-9, we explore:

  • Relationships and empathy

  • Identifying passions

  • Personal leadership style

  • Mission statement

Completion

What becomes possible now?

The final sessions are not an ending — they're an orientation toward what comes next. Students look back at how far they've come, celebrate the shifts they've made, and build the tools they'll need to keep moving forward when things get hard. Resilience isn't something that develops all at once. It's something that gets practiced. By Session 10 the student has a full toolkit to draw from. The program ends. The work doesn't.

In session 10, we explore:

  • Resilience

  • Celebration and reflection

  • Designing the future

  • Well-designed actions for what comes next

What Coaching Is and Isn’t

Coaching works best when a student is genuinely invested. Not perfectly — but willingly. That's the one requirement I hold firm on.

Coaching is

Coaching is a structured, collaborative process. Each session is built around the student's agenda — what's present, what they want to explore, what they want to move toward. The work is forward-looking and action-oriented, grounded in positive psychology and real accountability from session to session.

coaching is not

Coaching isn't tutoring — there are no assignments, no subject-matter instruction, no grades at stake. It isn't therapy either. Therapy tends to look backward, tracing the roots of what's hard. Coaching doesn't start from deficit — it starts from the assumption that the student already has what it takes to get where they want to be.

Who I Am As a Coach

I've always shown up for my students with an open heart. Not as the expert with the answers, but as someone genuinely curious about who they are and where they're headed. I meet students with respect and with real interest in their individual story — because every story has a thread worth following.

My identity as a teacher never went away. I may not be in front of a classroom anymore, but those years with high school and college students inform everything I do in a coaching session. Combined with my doctoral work in curriculum and learning, my certification as an Academic Life Coach, and my training as a yoga instructor, I bring both the academic depth and the human presence this work requires.
